Oracle Responsys Search & Manage

Opportunity

As part of a larger design initiative to adopt Oracle’s design language, we conducted an audit of the management interfaces in an effort to improve its functionality. For many years, Oracle Responsys users relied on the management interfaces to find objects in the platform. The original design allowed the users to interact with one object at a time, slowing them from the performing task at hand. This design also did not scale to other channels and object types that were added over time.

Research & Findings

The Product Management and UX teams hosted two UX summits a year. We invited a range of users to help us identify usage patterns and needs. Through their feedback, the following three main issues were determined:

  1. Looking for a specific object in the platform was time-consuming due to the lack of global search capabilities

  2. Unintuitive filtering model in the management pages often resulted in inefficient result sets leading to oversight of object information

  3. The inability to see the details of multiple objects at once made it hard to link usage association between different types of objects

Design Objectives

  1. Adopt Oracle’s design language to comply with the company’s design and development standards

  2. Add global and local search capabilities in the platform to improve object finding efficiency

  3. Design a unified solution for the search and the management interfaces to provide a seamless experience for the end user

  4. Design a solution that would scale across all channels for consistency among the user experience as well as the platform’s development and management efforts

Iterations

Each object in the platform serves a unique purpose and has its own set of metadata and actions.

Commonalities amongst objects

To determine how to present all this information seamlessly, I looked for commonalities amongst all the objects in all the channels. By identifying these, I was able to expose the most relevant information and actions for each object type in one screen.

The design of the search results page needed to cohesively and seamlessly display multiple object types.

Solution

By adopting Oracle’s design language, we had the chance to modernize and standardize the platform’s search and management interfaces. We opted for a clean list view layout that immediately exposes the most relevant information and actions for each object type. Simultaneously, users can quickly view more details of one or multiple objects while swiftly filtering the results. Moreover, users are also able to monitor, manage and act on objects within the same interface.

“The search box and different filtering criteria are a huge plus. All the filters that we currently have are important. The ability to choose multiple options within a common filtering area is a HUGE plus and improvement from the previous (non-intuitive) version. The new design looks and feels much better and is more usable.”
